Other Peoples’ Blogs Appreciation Post

Womanist Musings: This is, for me, the blog that started it all. I would not be anywhere near who I am today if it wasn’t for this blog. Since it’s been running for so long and has had such a diverse cast of guest posters, this is one of the best, truly intersectional sites out there. It’s practically overflowing with social justice self-education fodder. Not to mention I practically worship the woman who runs it, Renee, because she is one of the most amazing writers I’ve ever seen. I think I’ve systematically read pretty every post on Womanist Musings over the course of the past couple years or so.

Fangs for the Fantasy
: For all your social justice pop culture needs! My favorite posts are the social commentary ones, although I like to read the reviews too. This site is run by the woman from Womanist Musings and another guy (he runs Spark in Darkness, another fantastic social-justice-oriented site much like Womanist Musings). Fangs for the Fantasy is the only reason my writing has got any sort of self-awareness to it. This site and Womanist Musings are the two blogs to whom I owe, like, 60% of my current personality and mindset.

Big Blog of Knowledge: I positively adore this blog. Never fails to make me laugh, not to mention the people who run it are freakin’ brilliant. Definitely worth checking out. (also, I have a guest post up over there, wink wink nudge nudge). The girl who runs it is not only a great blogger but, in my interactions with her, just a really awesome person as well. Also worth checking out is Stressing Out College which is, as far as I know, run by the same girl.

A Boy and Her Dog: I’m personally really uneducated in trans issues in general, and my only reliable resource is blogs like this one. Like Womanist Musings, this blog has been running for so long that there’s hours if not full days’ worth of reading material. Also notable is Gendermom (the first wordpress blog I ever followed, holla!).

Springhole: This was the site that referred me over to Fangs for the Fantasy in the first place, which in turn led me to Womanist Musings. This is primarily a writing website (also contains tips for RPs and fanfic, but I’ve never dared to delve into that shadowy nerd world for fear that I’ll never return). There’s also some great social justice commentary, particularly pertaining to pop culture and fiction, and the person who runs it is, in my opinion, really witty.

More Than Skin Deep: Seriously, praise be to this blog. If there is a god/dess, then S/He has sent Val from heaven to be totally amazing and kind to the rest of us. This blog is basically a mix of those cheesy inspirational tumblr pictures (which I love all too much) and gritty, intelligent, heartbreaking commentary on eating disorders, addiction, and self harm. Along the same vein, I also adore Forever Going Forward. I think the girl who runs it is a brilliant writer.

How to be a Heartbreaker: I don’t really know how to describe this blog accurately, so I think I’ll just let it speak for itself. Its tagline is “True Life Stories of a Playa Bitch,” if that gives you any hint to the content (hint: it’s at times witty, hot, and heart-wrenchingly honest, and I adore every word of it. Not to mention she’s got amazing taste in music. Go read it now).

Okay, so that right there is a list of the blogs that have changed my life. I follow a bunch of others too, but these are the only ones I’ve been reading for long enough/have read enough of to have a serious impact on me. So I want to thank these blogs (and their bloggers) for being inspirational/funny/intelligent/eye-opening/any and all of the above. If you’ve got a blog you’d like me to check out, or are just a huge fan of some other person’s blog and want me to follow them, just let me know down in the comments! I’m always looking for new blogs to follow. 🙂

  1. My dahling Sophia, I must say you have fabulous taste in content. Because of that, I’m just gonna have to check out all these other blogs! Thanks for the love, love, and I look forward to more of your own thought-provoking stuff 🙂
